║ TTKEY -- Tiny Tafel to Keyword Converter ║

INTRODUCTION
This morning, Cindy Scott pointed out on the FidoNet GENEALOGY echomail
conference that the BlueWave offline mail reader has a keyword-search
mechanism that can be used very effectively by genealogists. Although
I am a registered user of BlueWave, the keyword-search feature had
escaped my attention. I am very grateful that it was pointed out,
because its use will allow me -- with greatly reduced effort -- to
watch a large number of genealogical conferences for names of interest
to me.
It immediately occurred to me that a simple Tiny-Tafel-to-keyword-file
converter would allow widespread use of this, and similar, search
capabilities with minimal effort. Such a converter would also allow
genealogists to maintain a Tiny Tafel, and automatically update the
corresponding keyword files.
Since I've gained a little time from learning about the keyword-search
capabilities of my offline editor, I decided to devote a small amount
of time to producing such a simple converter. My total investment in
both program and documentation is about two hours, so it should be clear
that it's a simple, bare-bones converter.
TTKEY is based on the COMMSOFT Tiny Tafel Specification 1.6, dated
11 December 1986, which is the latest such specification I have
seen. If there are later specifications which alter the desired
behavior of the program, please let me know.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
TTKEY requires an IBM PC or compatible computer.
FILES IN THE PACKAGE
TTKEY.DOC This document.
TTKEY.EXE The program itself.
FILE_ID.DIZ A program description for use by BBSes and disk vendors.
HOW TO USE TTKEY
To see usage information for TTKEY, simply type
TTKEY
with no arguments.
The command line for using the conversion facilities of TTKEY has
the form:
TTKEY name [prefix]
The "name" string is used to construct input and output filenames
with extensions of "TT" and "KEY", respectively. Thus, the command
TTKEY JONES
causes TTKEY to read a Tiny Tafel file called JONES.TT, and to write
a corresponding keyword file called JONES.KEY. Any surnames found
in the JONES.TT file will be extracted and written to JONES.KEY, in
a form such as:
JONES
SMITH
The optional "prefix" string can be used to prepend special characters
such as the "!", "@", and "#" characters used by BlueWave. Thus, a
typical command line for producing a BlueWave keyword file might be
TTKEY RAMSEY "#"
This would extract surnames from RAMSEY.TT and produce a keyword file
of the form:
#RAMSEY
#HENSLEY
#MADOLE
A likely use of the TTKEY output file would be to place it in the
BlueWave directory, changing its filename to KEYWORDS.BW. A more
sophisticated use would be to use it as a starting point for a
KEYWORDS.BW file that also contains other special words or phrases
of interest. When the Tiny Tafel is updated, simply generate a new
*.KEY file and use a text editor to insert it in the appropriate
place in the KEYWORDS.BW file.
